Now, Dangal Tops Charts At Chinese Box Office

After making its mark in the Indian box office, Aamir Khan’s Dangal is now ruling the charts at the Chinese Box office.

Inspired by the lives of wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat, the film has reportedly made around $30million in its opening week in China. This has made it the highest grossing Indian film in the country where it was released on May 4.

This is not it, the Nitish Kumar-directed film has even gone beyond the earnings of Hollywood film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on its seventh day of release in the Chinese cinema halls. Media reports suggest that by this Thursday, Guardians of the Galaxy raked in $3.5million.

Released as Wrestling! Father, Khan’s other movies have also reached the Chinese theatres like PK, Dhoom 3, and 3 idiots and they did good business there as well. But Dangal has broken all records of his past films. Dangal’s attendance rating is almost double to that of Guardians of the Galaxy which stands second in line. It is in 104 years of Indian Cinema that a film has done that well in China.

China is the second largest movie market after the US with about 28,000 movie theatres. This says a lot about how big Indian movies can become in the Chinese market. Dangal has opened new avenues for Bollywood and regional cinema in the Chinese movie market and can gross in larger profits from there as well.

The important thing to note is that Indian films are only offered about 5,000 cinemas in China and yet Dangal has broken records over many famous Hollywood sequels in the industry. Now many Chinese movie distribution companies are collaborating with their Indian counterparts to build a larger market for Indian movies to be released in China. More than profit-making, it will also create newer jobs for people on both sides of the border.
