A 23-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped and murdered by six men including a juvenile in Delhi. The incident took place on the night of 16 December 2012. The case witnessed many twists and turns, with one of the convicted killing himself in Jail and the other four adult convicts filing a number of pleas to request a stay on their execution. The 23-year-old paramedic student was given the name “Nirbhaya (fearless)”. After her death, 11 days after the brutal assault, her parents started a campaign to get her justice. Asha Devi and Badrinath, organized Nirbhaya Chetna Diwas every year in their unfailing demand for justice for their daughter. The Delhi court issued a death warrant against the four convicts on January 7.

However, soon after this, the Nirbhaya convicts started exhausting their legal options and the execution was hence delayed by two months. Their last plea was rejected by the Delhi court today and the execution is all set to take place tomorrow morning at 5:30 AM. Akshay Kumar Singh, one of the convicts had challenged the rejection of his mercy plea by President Ram Nath Kovind in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, however, rejected his plea today. It also rejected another convict Mukesh Singh's plea challenging Delhi High Court's order which rejected his claim of not being in Delhi on the day when the incident took place.

Nirbhaya Will Get Justice Tomorrow

"The courts gave them so many opportunities that they have now got the habit of bringing something ahead of the hanging date in order to get it postponed. Now, even our courts are aware of their tactics. Tomorrow, they will be hanged. Nirbhaya and all the girls in India would get justice. They don't have any pleas left in order to postpone the hanging date," Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi told ANI.
