New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's live interview was interrupted by an earthquake. Ardern was talking about the country’s ongoing relaxations of coronavirus lockdown when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the capital city of Wellington on Monday morning. Although no injuries or destructions have been reported, the earthquake shook Wellington and nearby areas. The earthquake had an epicentre 30 km northwest of Levin. A city near the capital, and at a depth of 37km, as per GeoNet. Ardern is being for not losing her cool and carrying on with the interview like it was everyday business.

"Quite a decent shake"

In the video that has gone viral on social media, one can clearly see the effects of tremors from the earthquake as a still smiling Ardern tells the show host Ryan Bridge. “ We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here, quite a - - quite a decent shake here”. She further adds, “If you see things moving behind me, the beehives moves a little more than most”. Later Ardern continued her interview and affirmed that she was safe.

Earthquakes in New Zealand

It was later revealed in a press briefing that the earthquake lasted for more than 30 seconds. It caused panic among people, both at homes and offices, who had to look for cover and hiding under the table. However, New Zealanders are quite accustomed to Earthquakes as New Zealand lies on the seismically active “Ring of Fire”. Which is a 40,000-km arc of volcanoes and ocean trenches bordering much of the Pacific Ocean. According to GeoNet New Zealand experiences around 20,000 earthquakes every year, though the vast majority are too small to be felt by humans.

The people in New Zealand are quite accustomed to Earthquakes as the country lies on the seismically active “Ring of Fire”

The 39-year-old, who became the Prime Minister in 2017, is quite loved by the people in not only in her country but all over the world. Although she is known for effective handling of various crises including a mass shooting in Christchurch last year, she has been praised worldwide for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
