The National Commission for Women announced on August 6 that its chairperson, Rekha Sharma has been given another three-year term.

The official announcement added, " The commission will continue doing good work for the welfare of women under the able leadership of Hon'ble Chairperson."

Sharma took charge of the Women's Commission on August 7, 2018. She had been associated with the Commission since 2015 and was given additional duties in 2017. Under her leadership, the Commission launched a 24/7 helpline for women on July 27, 2021. The helpline aims to support the women by connecting with hospitals, police authorities, legal service authority psychological services and others.

Another helpline was launched under the #Happytohelp campaign of the commission. The helpline offered support to women during the second wave of the pandemic. The Commission stated that in the span of less than a month, they received over 648 calls from pregnant women seeking medical support.

In October last year, Rekha Sharma faced backlash on Twitter as her old tweets surfaced in which she was seen making political attacks on other women. Many social media users even asked for resignation from the Women's Commission. #SackRekhaSharma started trending on Twitter. That is when Sharma restricted her account.

Over the years, the National Commission for Women has taken its stand against crimes committed against women. They have also asked the concerned authorities to take action in the matters.

Recently, a website named Sulli Deals was seen putting pictures of women without their consent and was auctioning them online. The National Commission for Women had then issued a letter to the Delhi police chief asking him to initiate a probe in the matter.

The official statement read, "Chairperson Ms Rekha Sharma has written to Commissioner of Police, Delhi seeking intervention to investigate into the matter and for filing FIR under relevant sections so that the perpetrators of the crime cannot escape punishment."

The NCW had asked Delhi police to submit a report on the investigation within 10 days.
