*Trigger warning: This article contains graphic details of a crime.

The woman took the step after allegedly being pushed to abort the baby by her lover, who is married and father to a child already. The accused had reportedly asked the survivor to follow steps shown in a YouTube video to abort the baby after she got pregnant. When her family members weren't at home one day, she took the life-threatening step of self-aborting the foetus, even cutting the umbilical cord using household items, to detach it.

When her family learned about the incident they approached the police to file a complaint against the accused. In her statement, the survivor alleged that she was raped by the man, who works as a driver, over 50 times since 2016, promising to marry her.

According to the senior inspector of Yashodhanagar police station, Sanjay Jadhav, the survivor's family felt that the accused had ditched her with false promises "as he was already a family man with a child and did not have enough family income." The accused has already married twice, with his first marriage resulting in a divorce. Despite having a child with his second wife he had been in a relationship with the survivor for the last six years. The woman however also alleged that the accused used to spike and take sexual advantage.

A forensics team from the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital has now been directed to retrieve remains of the foetus from Taj Nagar burial ground, however, there has been no success so far in tracing the location for the burial. The accused was arrested on September 23 on charges of rape.
