According to reports, the investigating police are currently awaiting the post-mortem of the toddler which will confirm whether she was sexually assaulted.

The deceased baby, identified as Aarya, resided with her parents and grandparents at Ambedkar Nagar in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai. She was allegedly killed by a transgender person who was accompanied by another unidentified person after they allegedly abducted her on Friday. According to a report by the Indian Express, the duo was vexed at the family of the girl for refusing to pay them money upon the child's birth.

The police said that the accused duo killed Aarya by burying her alive in marshy land along the Arabian Sea, as an attempt to teach the family a lesson. Prior to the alleged murder, the duo abducted her when she was sleeping with her parents and six-year-old brother, the officials added.

It was late at night when the mother discovered that her child was missing after which she informed her husband and inquired with her in-laws, who were sleeping on the floor of the one-plus-one building.

Immediately the family registered a case of kidnapping at the Cuffe Parade police station, along with local residents.

The grandfather of the deceased Chandrakant Chitkote said that they believe Kanhiya Chaugule, known as Kanu, as the prime suspect of the case as they had come to the house on Thursday evening and demanded Rs 2,000 and other valuables as a baby girl was born in the house.

“We did not give Kanu any money and asked her to come on the day of the toddler’s naming ceremony, due to which there was a verbal argument between them. Kanu then made threats and left," he added.

Soon after the registration of the case, Kanu surrendered at the police station and also named an accomplice who helped in the killing.

Having met Sonu right after the mentioned verbal spat, Kanu told him that they were upset because of being refused to pay money.
