The Mother's Day murder case has come as a shock to everyone in Queens district, New York. A man of Indian origin allegedly killed and sexually assaulted his mother on the eve of Mother's Day.

"Once down, the son allegedly continued the attack, strangling and punching his mother before sexually assaulting her. The victim lost consciousness and then died," the New York Post quoted the officials as saying.

Here's what we know about the Mother's Day murder case:

  1. Pushkar Sharma, a man of Indian origin allegedly killed and sexually assaulted his 65-year-old mother, Siraj Sharma at their home in Jamaica in Bellerose Manor. The murder took place on Saturday morning, a day before Mother's Day.
  2. Prosecutors say that the suspect had grabbed his mother from behind, choked her and punched her until she fell on the floor.
  3. He then got hold of his wallet and keys and walked to the 105th Precinct, where he confessed to the crime.
  4. Pushkar Sharma told the police that he kept choking his mother until he was completely sure that she was dead.
  5. Later, Sharma's sister found their mother's body in the basement. Her body was then rushed to Long Island Jewish Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
  6. “What should have been a celebration of Mother’s Day became a brutal, tragic nightmare for the family. The defendant in this horrific case allegedly choked, punched, sexually assaulted and killed his mother in their home,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz is quoted saying in a May 9 press release.
  7. Pushkar Sharma's neighbour, Kelvin said that Sharma had mental health problems. However, no one suspected that he would murder anyone. He also said that the family was very nice and friendly.
  8. Kelvin further added that the neighbours had called the police when they noticed that Sharma was behaving erratically. When the cops had caught him then, people said that he was not on his medications.
  9. Sharma was arraigned in the Mother's Day murder case on Sunday. He will now have to appear in court one more time on May 24.
