The soon-to-be First Lady Jill Biden named Indian-American Garima Verma as her new digital director on Thursday. Verma, who was born in India and grew up in Ohio and California, will bring “a shared commitment to building an administration that lifts up all Americans,” Biden noted in a statement.

Michael LaRosa has also joined the team as press secretary and Biden also mentioned about including more staff from “varied and diverse backgrounds,” a report by CNN said.

Verma sharing her excitement on the appointment said, “This past year, I took a leap of faith. I didn’t know where it would lead — all I knew was that I wanted to dedicate my life to the service of others, to advocating for and empowering different communities, and to doing what I could to make the world a better place for everyone.”

She further said that she found her “next righteous fight” and expressed gratitude and honour to lead the virtual campaigns for “such an intelligent, talented, empathetic leader like Dr. Biden.” Adding that she can’t wait to take charge and see what happens next with the Biden-Harris team and how together they will “tackle important issues facing our communities.”

She also reflected on the “sacrifices” made by her parents and  acknowledged their hard work.

Sarah J. Galvez, director of social and audience development for the Biden campaign, congratulated Verma and claimed that she “blew me away” with her “tenacity” and “dedication”.

Verma also thanked Galvez for “taking a chance” on her. She said she received support from Galvez when she “wanted so badly to fight to change the world.”

Who is Garima Verma?

Before taking up this position, Verma was a part of the Biden-Harris campaign as an audience development and content strategist. She has previously worked as a volunteer with the content team, designing graphics for distribution to Biden-Harris volunteers across the country.

She also worked at Paramount Pictures and The Walt Disney Company’s ABC Network.

She will now closely work with incoming First Lady Dr Jill Biden and play a critical role in supporting the operations of the First Lady’s office.
