The incident was reported from Ramgaon, Uttar Pradesh. According to the additional superintendent of police, Bahraich, Ashoka Kumar, Kandhai and Ramvati are residents of Jamapur village and got married in 2006.

Three years later, Ramvati went missing and her family members filed a case against Kandhai, accusing him of kidnapping and murder. In 2017, the court sentenced the husband to 10 years of imprisonment. However, after serving six months of jail time, he appealed in the high court and got bail.

Kumar further informed that a relative of Kandhai spotted Ramvati at her sister and brother-in-law’s house. He said, “Kandhai later informed his other relatives who reached the spot, only to be joined by the entire village population outside the residence of Ramvati’s brother-in-law to witness the impossible.”

The police were subsequently informed that Ramvati was alive and well and had been at her sister’s home. A police team led by Station House Officer (SHO) of Ramgaon, Sanjay Singh along with the women police team reach the spot soon after.

Ramvati was then taken to one Stop Centre, a place where women affected by violence are given shelter. She would now be produced in court and the police will seek direction from the court regarding the case.

Kandhai said his wife Ramvati had gone missing on February 5, 2009. He told journalists that she had gone out to attend nature’s call but did not return. Kandhai said, “We all began a search for her but when she did not return till late evening, my father-in-law Chhanga threatened to get me jailed levelling dowry harassment allegations on me.”

Despite the news that Ramvati was found alive, many questions remained unanswered in the case. Why did Ramvati go into hiding? Was the couple having any differences, or was it because of their families? Is there a domestic violence angle to the case? Hopefully a further investigation into the matter will yield more answers.
