Maia Sandu On Track To Become Moldova's First Female President

Maia Sandu is on the verge of winning the second round of Moldova's Presidential Elections. The preliminary results show her well ahead of the pro-Russian incumbent Igor Dodon with almost 99 percent ballots counted. Sandu will become the first female president of Moldova.

According to the central election commission's website, Sandu was leading on Sunday night with 57 percent of the votes over Dodon's 44 percent. The full results are expected on Monday.

Supporters chanted “President Maia Sandu” and “a country for young people” when the news of Sandu leading in the election began doing rounds on Sunday night, reports Al Jazeera. While speaking to the supporters, Sandu promised to unite the country and tackle corruption. She said, "We need the state to work for citizens, not for thieves and corrupt officials."

Two weeks ago, the former Prime Minister of Moldova Sandu finished ahead of Dodon in the first round of presidential elections but the votes weren't enough to declare Sandu as the outright winner.

On Sunday, more than 2,00,000 Moldovans living overseas casted their vote, as compared to a total of 1,50,000 in the first round of the presidential election. Almost 53 percent of the eligible population with voting rights took part in the run-off ballot, stated by the Central Election Commission Website. Voters had cast their votes at more than 2,000 polling stations, including those for the Moldovians living abroad.

Sandu is known for her Pro-European Union stance. When she occupies the coveted office, she will have to deal with not only the coronavirus pandemic, but also the economic challenges faced by the country that is said to be the poorest nation in Europe, reports BBC.
