MP Stalker Out On Bail Shoots Woman Complainant Dead Outside Her Home

Stalker shoots woman: A man in Madhya Pradesh, out on bail from arrest for allegedly stalking and threatening a woman, shot her dead, reports said Friday. She was 21 years old. He reportedly fled the scene after killing her. The incident occurred in the city of Sagar.

According to reports, police arrested the 24-year-old man three months ago after the woman (now deceased) filed a complaint of harassment against him. "He was pressuring her for marriage and even threatened her with dire consequences," her brother was quoted saying by Hindustan Times. 

Out on bail since last month, the alleged stalker turned up to the woman complainant's house Thursday and shot her. The family reportedly attempted to seize his gun but he pelted them with stones and escaped, police said.

The woman was brought dead to the hospital.

The woman's family said the alleged stalker stayed nearby and routinely used to harass her. She informed them three months ago, following which a police complaint was filed. The family says they thought the man would not pester her anymore when out on bail, now that he had faced arrest.

The incident occurred in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh and grabbed national headlines. After the woman and her family filed a complaint of sexual harassment against the man, identified as one Gaurav Sharma, leading to his arrest in 2018, relations between them turned sour. Sharma, released on bail a month after arrest, and the woman's father had an altercation in March 2021 outside a temple, leading to the latter's murder.

Earlier this month too, a man arrested for attacking his wife in 2017 killed her when out on interim bail, as per reports. A court in Delhi presiding over the case pulled up police authorities, observing the matter reflected a "failure of the system."
