In A Historic First, Mother-Son Duo To Receive Presidential Awards In Same Year

In a historic first, a mother-son duo has been conferred with prestigious Presidential Awards in the same year, marking a proud moment for the Indian Armed Forces. Lieutenant General Sadhna S. Nair, VSM, was conferred with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) for her outstanding leadership and contributions to the Army. Meanwhile, her son, Squadron Leader Tarun Nair, received the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) for his exceptional bravery in the Indian Air Force.

First Women To Serve As Director General Medical Services of Army

Earlier last year, Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair was the first woman to serve as Director General Medical Services (Army) in 2024. She is a graduate of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, holds a Postgraduate degree in Family Medicine, and a diploma in Maternal & Child Health and Health Care Management. She also completed advanced training in Medical Informatics from AIIMS, New Delhi. She also underwent specialised training in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Warfare with the Israeli Defence Forces and Military Medical Ethics with the Swiss Armed Forces. She has been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal, along with other recognitions, solidifying her legacy as a pioneer in military medicine.

Her son, Flight Lieutenant Tarun Nair, graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2018, earning both the “Sword of Honour” and the President’s Plaque for achieving the highest overall merit in his pilot course. In March 2024, he showed his exemplary calm under extreme duress and superior flying skills which not only saved a valuable combat asset of the Indian Air Force but also averted a potential mishap that could have resulted in loss of civilian life and property.

On the eve of Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu approved gallantry awards for 93 armed forces and central armed police personnel, including two Kirti Chakras and 14 Shaurya Chakras, recognising acts of exceptional bravery and service. She also approved 58 “Mentioned-in-Despatches” awards for Armed Forces personnel, including four posthumous recognitions.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the gallantry awards include two Kirti Chakras (one posthumous), 14 Shaurya Chakras (three posthumous), one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 66 Sena Medals (seven posthumous), two Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), and eight Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).
