A lot is being said and done on the Lakhimpur Kheri rape and murder case. However, in a shocking development, a panel discussion raised eyebrows on social media when a Bharatiya Janata Party leader claimed mobile phones played a ploy in the case.

Two Dalit sisters, both minors were found hanging from a tree in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh on September 14, 2022. Six men were arrested for the rape and murder hours after they were found dead under the Nighasan police station limits of Lakhimpur Kheri.

Local villagers and the girls’ family accused three men of rape and murder.

On Thursday, while discussing the case on a newsroom panel, BJP leader Alok Vats, opined on how women in small towns and villages after gaining access to mobile phones make plans to go out and get raped. He further added that he belongs to one of the remotest villages of India and  knows what mobile does there. He further went on to say that people sitting in Delhi wouldn’t know the impact of what access to phones does in remote areas. Watch his statement on video ">here.

Saket Gokhale, National Spokesperson of Trinamool Congress also tweeted the video said he was speechless and shocked by this statement.

The brutal killings of the sisters has sparked wide-scale outrage and a war of words with all many targeting the BJP-led government for failure on the law-and-order front. Meanwhile Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the trial of the case in a fast-track court and the police forensic team has gathered evidence and recorded statements of the accused.

Six people, including a local villager, Chotu Gautam, and five others from neighbouring Lalpur village named Suhail, Hafizul Rehman, Junaid, Karimuddin, and Arif have been arrested on charges of rape and murder. The postmortem, conducted late on September 14 at the Lakhimpur Kheri District Hospital, revealed the girls had faced sexual violence before being murdered.
