- Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar has been found guilty of kidnapping and raping a young girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district.
- He has been convicted under Section 376 IPC and Section 5(c) of POCSO.
- Sentencing is scheduled for Thursday. According to sources, his chances of getting life-imprisonment are high.
A rape complaint was only registered against Sengar after the survivor went public last year. She staged a protest outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Lucknow home and threatened to set herself ablaze if she was not heard. She took this step after her father was thrashed by Sengar’s brother. He was badly wounded and instead of hospital, he was taken in custody and charged.

In July this year, the rape survivor was travelling with her advocate and two aunts. Suddenly, their car was hit by a speeding truck, with blackened number plates. This incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district. Two of her aunts – one of whom was a witness to the rape – died in the accident.
According to a first information report filed by her uncle after the accident, police personnel on her security detail kept Kuldeep Sengar notified about her whereabouts and none of the security personnel accompanied her.
The young girl was airlifted to Delhi’s AIIMS and released in September. At present, she and her family have been provided CRPF security as per the apex court’s orders. They have now been shifted to a rented accommodation in Delhi after Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) offered them assistance.
Who is Kuldeep Singh Sengar
Kuldeep Singh Sengar is a former BJP MLA from Bangarmau, Uttar Pradesh. He was suspended from his political party following the outrage over accusations of rape. In a statement, the State BJP president Swatantra Dev Singh said, “Sengar was suspended by the party earlier and there is no change in his status. There is no change in the position of the party and the government, which is standing with the victim of the Unnao (rape) case.”
In August 2019, the state and the Centre led BJP government finally expelled him from the party after facing national outrage.
