The palace officials announced that King Charles III’s coronation would take place on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London. The announcement said the coronation would take place eight months after Queen Elizabeth II’s death, to allow the country to mourn and plan for the ceremony.

The coronation will be held at Westminster Abbey, where every coronation ceremony has been held for the last 900 years. King Charles III will officially take sacred vows to the country and the church when he is anointed with holy oil and received the orb, sceptre, and coronation ring at the ceremony

The official statement read, “The Ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort. The Coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”

The late Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation was held on June 2, 1953. According to Buckingham Palace, the tradition of being “anointed, blessed, and consecrated” by the Archbishop of Canterbury has been conducted at most royal coronations since 1066.

The Queen’s coronation included 8,000 guests and lasted almost three hours, but King Charles’ coronation is expected to be smaller and shorter. Reportedly, the guest list for the event has been cut from 8,000 to 2,000.

Britain’s longest-serving monarch Queen Elizabeth II passed away at her Balmoral estate in Scotland on September 8. She had served on the throne for 70 years. The Queen and the late Prince Philip’s eldest son King Charles will be crowned as king next year.
