104-year-old Kuttiyamma Scores 89% In Kerala Basic Literacy Exam

Kuttiyamma used to sell vegetables till a few years ago. Maths is her favourite subject in which she scored very well.

Centenarian Kerala woman Kuttiyamma has scored 89 percent in Kerala state's basic literacy exam. The exam is a part of ‘Mikavulsavam’ which tests basic knowledge of students. She is now eligible to write class 4 exam.

Kuttiyamma is a native of Ayarkunnam panchayat in Kottayam district. The 104-year-old woman scored 89 out of 100 marks in an examination conducted by the Kerala State Literacy Mission which tests preliminary knowledge of students. Those who qualify the examination are eligible to sit for the fourth-grade equivalent literacy exam. These examinations are held in every panchayat in the state. The results came out on November 10, post which the members of Ayarkunnam panchayat council visited the lady's residence and felicitated her.

State Education Minister V Sivankutty congratulated Kuttiyamma for endeavour saying that the 104-year-old showed that age is no hurdle in making in education. “If there is a mind to achieve goals, age is just a number,” the minister added.

Kuttiyamma used to sell vegetables till a few years ago. She was married off at 15 and had no formal education though she could read. Maths is her favourite subject in which she scored very well.

Saksharata prerak Rehna, trained Kuttiyamma along with six other students in reading, writing and other aspects of the literacy examination. She told the Indian Express “She was very interested in learning. She used to read the newspaper a bit. Her family members told me that she was able to put letters together and read. But she didn’t know how to write. So, I taught her to write her name and address. She picked up very fast.”

Kuttiyamma, is very active and moves around the house on her own without anyone’s help. However she is a bit hard of hearing and her eyesight is weak during the night.

Kerala’s Literacy Mission conducts classes and equivalent examinations for those who missed their opportunities to learn. People like Kuttiyamma education knows no age bar.
