Kerala Topper Granny Operate Computer

Wondering what to do in your free time? Well, Karthyayani Amma, a 96-year-old great grandmother, has a new motivation. After topping the Class 4 exam, by scoring 98 out of 100, she expressed her desire to learn how to work on a computer. Her high spirit and enthusiasm are heartwarming.

On studying and operating a computer, she said, “I didn’t study well when I could. I saw small children learning to write, and that’s when a desire in me was ignited to study. And when the teacher asked if I wanted to study, I said yes. I wish to continue studying, learning computer in my free time. All this may help me to get a job.”

Karthyayani was felicitated by Kerala chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, after her achievement. She had then expressed her wish for computer studies. On the occasion of Diwali, Kerala Education Minister Professor C Raveendranath gifted Karthyayani Amma a laptop. The granny was all smiles when she learnt how to type her name on the laptop.

The Kerala State Literacy Mission

Karthyayani Amma wants to pass the Class 10 equivalent exam through the same mission. Her daughter, who is 60 year old, has also recently passed the test. The mission has been a success. While 43,330 candidates appeared for the test, 42,933 candidates cleared it.

The Kerala state mission, which aims to achieve 100% literacy in the state, has helped many like Amma to achieve their dreams. “Aksharalaksham”, the project launched this year by the state, aims to eradicate illiteracy among marginalised communities like tribals, poor fishermen and slum-dwellers. “The aim of the Literacy Mission is to make the state fully literate in four years,” the official said.

Kerala is the most literate state of our country and these inspiring stories from the state motivate others to follow the same path.
