She further highlighted the significance by stating that "their contributions are far from mere tokenism. “They bring to the table a wealth of diverse perspectives that challenge established norms and infuse cliched discussions with fresh ideas rooted in social justice, fairness, and equity,” she added.

The Supreme Court justice mentioned that the legal profession in India no longer operated in silos and had witnessed significant changes in its demographic composition over the past few decades.

She described the changes as a vibrant and ever-evolving organism that “grew richer with each new voice joining the chorus.”

Justice Hima Kohli On First Generation Lawyers

Justice Kohli pointed out that first-generation lawyers from diverse backgrounds and increased representation of women in the legal profession were steps towards inclusivity. She added that this sent a powerful message across the country that the “tide has truly turned and the status quo is passe'.".

The Supreme Court justice went on to reveal that she is a first-generation woman law practitioner and shared her inspiring journey. She elaborated that she began her career in the early 90s when she partly operated from a makeshift office in the boot of her car and traced her journey to where she is now, serving the top court of the nation. “It was not easy. But perhaps easy was not what I was looking for,” she said.

She also said that first-generation lawyers hailing from diverse socio-economic backgrounds often choose this profession with a sense of purpose and mission that transcends traditional boundaries, adding that they will bring an outsider’s perspective that will challenge entrenched practices, which is critical for stimulating an ethical discourse within the legal community.

Speaking about the growing presence of women in the legal profession, Justice Kohli stated that it is not merely a matter of statistical representation but signifies a fundamental shift in the legal landscape. She also said that it was a positive step forward, not just in terms of gender diversity but also for the evolution of honest thinking in the practice of law.

She noted that women with their multitasking abilities bring diverse experiences and perspectives to the workplace, which will lead to a more nuanced understanding of moral considerations.

Justice Kohli also spoke about how the pandemic normalising work from home and law firms adapting to the change have created a balanced and flexible working environment, which has been beneficial for women and first-generation lawyers. She explained that it has allowed for a more inclusive work environment and expanded opportunities for those who had previously faced barriers to entering the legal profession due to the absence of a full-time office and a lack of infrastructure, or for those who thought about quitting due to personal obligations.

She stated that women lawyers often consider the broader social impact of legal decisions along with the direct impact they have on clients. She stressed that women enrich fields not just in family court but also in corporate law and IPR. She also pointed out the increasing representation of women in top positions across the various fields of law.

The Supreme Court Justice reiterated that when women step into positions of power and authority, “they influence critical decision-making in all spheres of life and help in closing the gender gap," and added that their very presence is an inspiration to those who are aspiring for those positions.
