Juhi Chawla 5G case: Citing safety concerns, Bollywood actor Juhi Chawla has filed a lawsuit against the implementation of 5G technology in India, reports said Monday. With India among countries moving fast to make the fifth-generation telecommunications network mainstream, Chawla has raised the issue of radiations plausibly causing severe harm to flora, fauna, humans and the environment at large.

The first hearing in the case was scheduled for May 31. Reports say the bench of Justice C Harishankar recused the matter and a hearing will now be held June 2.

As per a Times of India report, Chawla's suit seeks deeper research into 5G and certification of its safety to the public.

Quoting a statement from Chawla's spokesperson on the suit, the publication mentions the Ishq actor has urged the court to direct defendants "to produce their respective studies regarding RF radiation through mobile cell towers, and if not already conducted, to also conduct an efficient research, and without participation of private interest, and to subsequently furnish the report and declare whether or not the implementation of 5G in India would be safe..."

Chawla is among public figures known for having a green thumb and consistently advocates for environmental safety and preservation. Here's what she said about pollution.

With a 'STOP 5G' hashtag in March this year, Chawla had led "an appeal to support the fight against hazards caused by EMF radiation & save future of our children." See below:

Chawla's suit also brings notice to an RTI from the Telecommuncations Ministry that reveals "no studies by SERB have been conducted specifically on the effect of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G (/topic/5g) cellular technologies on humans, animals, birds, plants and other living organisms."

The lawsuit, simultaneously stating Chawla is not against the introduction of advanced technology, points out that "major diseases of modern civilization - cancer, heart disease and diabetes - are, in large part, caused by electromagnetic pollution, stems from a literature-base comprising of over 10,000 (ten thousand) peer-reviewed studies, a number much, much, much too large to be ignored."
