Journalist Kamaroopi passed away today in Bengaluru. He is reported to have passed away at his residence in Kolar, owing to old age. He was 87 years of age. Kamaroopi was known for his literary work.

Kamaroopi’s novel Kuduremotte was published in 1971 and won the Karnataka Sahitya Academy award. It was also made into a motion picture by G.V. Iyer. He wrote the Assamese version of the novel as well. It is called Ghorar Dima.

Who was Journalist Kamaroopi? 
  • Kamaroopi’s body has been donated to M S Ramaiah Hospital by his immediate family.
  • Journalist Kamaroopi’s real name is M.S. Prabhakara. He operated under his pen name Kamaroopi and is well known under that name.
  • His readers came to know him under his pen name for his collection Ondu Tola Punugu Mattu Itara Kathegalu.
  • Prabhakara was born in 1936 and stayed single. He worked as a correspondent for The Hindu in South Africa and Assam. 
  • He completed his Masters in English from Central College in Bengaluru. 
  • He began his career by working as a teacher at Dharwad and Bengaluru. He joined Gauhati University as a teacher in 1962. 
  • He then later moved on to journalism. He resigned from the University in 1975 and joined Economic and Political Weekly as Assistant Editor. 
  • He moved on to work for The Hindu as a special correspondent in 1983. He then went on to contribute to Frontline. He was responsible for covering northeastern development which became his domain. He was an expert at reporting ethnic issues and insurgency in the north.  
  • His book Looking Back into the Future raises persistent tissues in the northeast and Assam such as sovereignty, identity, ethnicity, and insurgency. 
  • Prabhakara moved to Johannesburg in 1994. He returned to Guwahati in 2002 and retired after a month. 
  • Post-retirement Prabhakara divided his time between Guwahati, Kolar, and Bangalore before retiring to his native residence in Kolar in 2013.
