Joe Biden Announces US's First All-Female Senior White House Communications Team

US President-Elect, Joe Biden, in a historic announcement on Sunday appointed an all-female senior White house communications team which according to his office marks a first for the country. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are sticking to their promise of putting together a diverse Cabinet so far, four out of the seven positions will be filled by women of colour. The all-female team includes Jen Psaki, Kate Bedingfield, Ashley Etienne, Symone Sanders, Pili Tobar, Karine Jean Pierre and Elizabeth Alexander.

Forty-one-year-old Psaki has held several senior positions in the White House. She will serve the highly visible role of White House press secretary. After the announcement, Psaki took to her Twitter and wrote, “Honored to work again for @JoeBiden, a man I worked on behalf of during the Obama-Biden Admin as he helped lead economic recovery, rebuilt our relationships with partners (turns out good practice) and injected empathy and humanity into nearly every meeting I sat in.”

While making the announcement Biden said, “Communicating directly and truthfully to the American people is one of the most important duties of a President, and this team will be entrusted with the tremendous responsibility of connecting the American people to the White House.” He further added, “These qualified, experienced communicators bring diverse perspectives to their work and a shared commitment to building this country back better," quoted by TOI.

Out of the other appointments Kate Bedingfield, who was Biden's deputy campaign manager, will be the White House communications director. Ashley Etienne will serve as communications director for Harris and Symone Sanders will be Harris's senior advisor and chief spokeswoman. Pili Tobar was named as deputy White House communications director and Karine Jean Pierre will be the principal deputy press secretary. Elizabeth Alexander was named as the communications director for the soon to be First Lady Jill Biden.
