Jharkhand Shelter Home Case: More Girl Inmates Faced Sexual Abuse

Jharkhand shelter home case:  Many more girl inmates were allegedly being sexually abused for over four years in shelter home Jharkhand.

This came to light, during an investigation into the sexual abuse of two minor girls, at a children’s home run by a state government-approved NGO, Mother Teresa Welfare Trust (MTWT). This was stated by Jamshedpur superintendent of police Dr M Tamil Vanan.

On Tuesday, the police filed a case under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code. This was after two girls complained against Harpal Singh Thapar, director of the home, his wife Pushpa Rani Tirkey, who is also the chairperson of East Singhbhum district child welfare committee (CWC), warden Geeta Singh, her son Aditya Singh, and another staff member Tony Singh. All the accused are now absconding according to reports.

Vanan then added that the two girls from the Jharkhand shelter home had video-recorded statements, in which they reiterated the charges made in their statements to a special POCSO court. They admitted that they were tortured, physically and mentally.

The police said that the details of the case were indeed horrifying. It is said that Thapar had allegedly been physical with the 19-year-old daughter of the warden. He and a few other people would involve themselves in allegedly abusing the woman regularly.

The girls claimed that no action was ever taken against Thapar, in spite of them repeatedly complaining to Tirkey, his wife.

Police investigating the death of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl at Jharkhand shelter home

The death of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl due to a brain tumour is being investigated. According to a report by Dr Vanan, the girl was the daughter of a rape survivor who didn't want her. She had died at the Jharkhand shelter home 25 days ago, and Harpal Singh Thapar never informed the police about the same.
