Rising boxing champ Jeanette Zacarias Zapata dies at the age of 18 following serious injuries she sustained in the ring during a professional fight.

Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, an 18-year-old boxer from Mexico, has passed away mere days following a knockout in the boxing ring in Montreal, Canada. According to reports, she sustained head injuries in a welterweight fight against Marie Pier Houle over the weekend and appeared to have a seizure, following which she was rushed to hospital.

Zapata was taking part in the GYM Gala International Boxing event. She is survived by her husband Jovanni Martinez.

News of her death was announced Thursday by fight promoter Yvon Michel, whose

— Yvon Michel (@yvonmichelGYM) September 3, 2021 said the teen passed away that day in the afternoon, five days after her match loss.

"The entire team at Groupe Yvon Michel team is extremely distressed by this painful announcement," the statement further read. "Jovanni is devastated and extremely upset," and promoters said he was beside Zapata in her last moments.

According to reports, Zapata was knocked out after Canada's Houle served her a left uppercut and a right hook in the fourth round. She was critical after the fight and was reportedly placed in a medically-induced coma, Mirror reports. She was battling for life in intensive care before she passed away.

A video of Zapata's final professional fight has gone viral on social media with netizens and fans condoling the young boxing star's death.

 

Houle, against whom Zapata played her final match, wrote on Facebook she was "sad and devastated." As per the BBC, Houle further wrote in a post on her private Instagram profile, "Boxing carries a lot of risks and dangers... This is our job, our passion. Never, forever, intention to seriously hurt an opponent is part of my plans." 

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has issued a statement following Zapata's death, saying it "mourns this irreparable loss."
