SUV Runs Over Young Woman In Jalandhar; Video Goes Viral, Cop Held

Jalandhar Hit and Run Case: Two women were run over by an SUV on the Jalandhar-Phagwara national highway in Jalandhar on Monday. The vehicle belongs to a Punjab Police inspector who has now been arrested. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras and the video made its way on social media, triggering outrage in the village.

One of the women identified as Navjot Kaur is a resident of Dhanowali village in Jalandhar. She died on the spot, her friend, Mamta, is seriously injured. The speeding vehicle did not stop after the accident. The incident took place at around 8.30 am.

The deceased Navjot worked in a car showroom and was trying to cross the highway along with her friend when the accident occurred.

The video which is now doing rounds on social media shows the two women crossing the road when the speeding vehicle rams into them. They had reportedly stepped back on the road divider but the car hit them.

After the video of the horrific accident went viral, angry residents of Dhanowali village blocked the national highway demanding justice for the deceased. There was a long traffic jam till Phagwara.

Cops had to be rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Navjot’s mother Tejinder Kaur said, “My daughter left for work in the morning and was crossing the road near a railway crossing when the car hit them. The sub-inspector should be charged with murder.”

Deputy commissioner of police Gurmeet Singh said that the driver, identified as inspector Amritpal Singh, has been taken into custody. “We will proceed accordingly. Amritpal was posted at the Punjab Armed Police headquarters located on the outskirts of Jalandhar,” he said.
