IUML Fields Noorbina Rasheed for Kerala Elections, Female Candidate After 25 Years

Noorbina Rasheed is the first woman after 25 years to contest for elections from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). In the Kerala elections she will be contesting from the Kozhikode South constituency.

Noorbina Rasheed: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is fielding a woman candidate for the first time after 25 years in the Kerala assembly elections of April 2021.

Noorbina Rasheed is the leader of the IUML women’s wing and is contesting the election from the Kozhikode South constituency. Kamarunnisa Anwar was a woman candidate fielded by IUML and lost to the CPI(M) in the 1996 elections in the same constituency. 25 years after Anwar contested the election from Kozhikode South constituency, Rasheed has been given the same opportunity.

Rasheed told reporters that “There were allegations that women were not given importance in our party. This is a reply to them. I will take up the responsibility and fulfill my duties towards the voters.”

The IUML announced candidates for 25 of the 27 seats it is contesting for as an ally of the Congress in the United Democratic Front (UDF). Other candidated include National General Secretary of IUML PK Kunhalikutty, State Secretary of IUML Dr MK Muneer, and IUML State General Secretary KPA Majeed who are contesting from Vengara, Koduvally, and Thiroor respectively.

Kunhalikutty who is contesting from Vengara, the constituency he won in 2016 before he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) at the Lok Sabha. He recently resigned as MP. The IUML leader PV Abdul Wahad will be retaining his seat in the Rajya Sabha.
