Triple Talaq crusader, Ishrat Jahan who joined BJP a few months back was asked to vacate a Hanuman Chalisa recital because she entered wearing a Hijab. After the incident, Jahan proceeded towards Golabari police station in Howrah to file a complaint against the incident as she alleged that she was threatened and abused by people participating in the recital and from people within her community as well. She accused her brother-in-law and her landlord of threatening and abusing her for taking part in the religious function.

“A huge crowd of people gathered outside my house and asked me why I went to attend a Hanuman Chalisa event wearing a hijab,” said Ishrat Jahan, NDTV reported.

“I said I am a secular person. If Hindus can be invited to namaz, why can't I go to a Hanuman Chalisa paath,” she said adding, “But the local people said, you should have gone without the hijab. You have maligned all Muslims. I was threatened, told to leave the house where I live. I live alone with my son. I am now scared.”

Jahan mentioned that when she was returning home with her son after his school, she saw hundreds of residents of Golabari area, where she lives, had surrounded her house and started intimidating her for attending the Hindu religious event. Golabari police station has started an enquiry into the matter, as per an officer at the police station.

Jahan has sought police protection as she believes that her life is in danger, the officer added. “I wish to say that we are living in a secular country and it is our democratic right to take part in any holy festival,” she wrote in her complaint to the police.

“My brother in-law and landlord started threatening me to leave my home and said get her out of the house. They also abused me severely and threatened to kill me,” the complaint read.

The triple talaq petitioner was one among five others who fought the case against the Islamic ritual of instant talaq. Her husband, in fact, divorced her using his religious power of instant Talaq while he was working in Dubai when one day, he called her up and divorced her by saying Talaq thrice.

After that Jahan moved the Supreme Court in order to fight against the unfair Islamic practice allowing Muslim men to divorce women without any accountability. Jahan had to face a lot of resistance from her community for raising her voice and has been threatened in the past as well for filing the petition. “I used to be scared during the triple talaq hearing as no one supported me, but this is more frightening,” she said.

Reportedly, the Hanuman Chalisa recital was a public event organised by local BJP leaders and they had called Jahan as guest because of her membership with the political party.
