On March 8, 2025, this year's International Women's Day, the world rallies behind the compelling theme 'Accelerate Action'. This is not just another catchy slogan, but a call urging each of us to speed up our efforts towards the fight for equality.
Why 'Accelerate' Action?
According to the World Economic Forum, achieving complete gender equality, at our current pace, might not be possible until 2158—which is about 133 years from now. Imagine telling your great-great-granddaughter there is a chance that she might finally be able to witness equality in her lifetime. Not exactly an inspiring bedtime story, is it?
This should not be taken just as a statistic, but as a warning for us to speed up our efforts in this fight. While we know progress has been made, it’s been too slow. Women are still earning less, getting fewer leadership roles, and still have to fight for their basic rights.
As Malala Yousafzai says, "We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back." Thus, the time to act is now.
But, How Do We 'Accelerate Action'?
Here’s what we need to do right now to 'accelerate action' and to ensure that we’re not stuck in this same conversation even after 50 years.
• Close The Pay Gap:
In the words of Hillary Clinton, "Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world." However, women still earn less than men for doing the exact same job, which is absolutely unfair, and needs to go.
• Women In Leadership:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg said it best, "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made." So let’s start by putting them there, as women are still underrepresented in several important places.
• Her Education Is Her Power:
From learning how to code to running a business, more women in STEM and leadership roles means more doors opening.
• Prioritising Women's Health:
Health isn’t just about not being sick. Mental health, maternal care, and access to proper medical facilities for women are non-negotiable.
The Time Is Up
This International Women's Day, let's not just talk the talk. Let's accelerate towards a future where equality isn't just a distant dream but a reality. The author and poet Audre Lorde has said, "I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own."
It is high time we step up, speak out, and actually accelerate action.
