On April 16, the dead body of Kartik Vasudev reached his hometown Ghaziabad and his mother could not control her tears looking at her child. She was spotted grieving beside the mortal remains of her son, sobbing bitterly. Kartik's family has earlier raised questions about the investigation by the police and reportedly said, "It seems unlikely that these were just random crimes. The man murdered two people in a span of two days. There has to be a motive or a target and it does not come across as random."

Kartik moved to Canada in January to pursue his higher studies and was working at a restaurant there. The Consulate General of India also expressed grief on the demise of the student and released a statement saying, "We are shocked & distressed at the unfortunate killing of Indian student Kartik Vasudev in a shooting incident in Toronto yesterday". It is reported that the suspect that killed Kartik had also killed another person, 35-year-old Elijah Eleazar Mahepath, two days after Kartik's shooting. The police dubbed both the cases as random homicide cases.
