Gwalior Horror: November 21, 2023

In a harrowing incident in Gwalior, a 17-year-old girl was brutally gang raped by a Facebook friend and two accomplices. The main suspect, Ramu Kushwaha, connected with the survivor on social media, leading to a meeting that ended in abduction. The perpetrators, including a relative of a former MLA, were arrested after the survivor reported the incident. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to catch hold of the third suspect, Chhote Khan.

Bhopal Deceit: Online Relationship Turned Nightmare

A 28-year-old man in Bhopal was charged for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman he met on Facebook. The accused manipulated the survivor with promises of marriage and, in a shocking twist, extorted Rs 8 lakh from her through online transfers. The survivor filed a complaint, prompting the police to register a case, and investigations are currently underway.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar Betrayal

A 24-year-old woman was robbed and sexually assaulted by an online friend she met on the Ola Party app. Sameer Salim Sheikh from  Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar invited the woman to his hometown, where he perpetrated the crime. The woman's belongings were stolen, and she reported the incident to the police, highlighting the dangers of online friendships turning sinister.

Navi Mumbai Nightmare

In Navi Mumbai, a 25-year-old man is accused of raping and threatening a 23-year-old woman he befriended through a mobile chat application. Navnath Kade gained the woman's trust before coercing her to meet him in Nashik and subsequently assaulting her. The survivor alleges forced marriage, physical abuse, and the dissemination of intimate photos on Instagram. The crimes occurred between June and August, underscoring the prolonged trauma experienced by survivors of online exploitation.

Matrimonial Site Horror in Uttar Pradesh

A physiotherapist from Andaman and Nicobar faced a horrific ordeal after meeting an individual on a matrimonial site. The survivor, having connected with Abhishek on Shadi.com, was gang-raped when she went to meet him. Frustrated with the lack of justice, she sent a self-immolation mail to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, drawing attention to the gravity of the situation.

We are living in an era dominated by digital connectivity, and recent distressing incidents highlight the harsh reality that even virtual space cannot be considered entirely secure. The alarming rise in crimes against women perpetrated by individuals they meet online or through social media platforms highlights a failure to ensure the safety of women in the digital realm.
