IIE, Goldman Sachs Announce Scholarships For Indian Women In Sciences

Women studying in science and technology streams at the university level have something to rejoice. According to a recent PTI report, a top US body in international education and global investment banking has announced a scholarship and mentoring programme for the Indian women students in science and technology-related fields. This will definitely provide them better opportunity as it aims at broadening their networks and building their leadership skills.

Technology continues to be a key source of growth and employment in India and Goldman Sachs believes in investing in young women and future leaders.

“WeTech Goldman Sachs Scholars” will be a 6-month-long scholarship presented by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and Goldman Sachs, where 25 Indian women will receive a merit-based USD 1,500 (INR 97,000) for the 2017-18 school year

Further, it aims to connect the recipients with an experienced mentor from Goldman Sachs for a six-month mentorship from June through December 2017. The mentorship will help connect these women with professionals working in the field who can provide them with valuable advice and guidance.

Shubha Iyer, managing director in the Technology division at Goldman Sachs in Bengaluru during an interaction after the announcement, said, “Engaging women at various stages from their academic years to a career is a critical step in addressing the gender gap often seen in the technology industry.”

According to Allan Goodman, who is the IIE president and CEO, “IIE and Goldman Sachs, providing young women university scholarships towards a degree in a STEM field and offering real-world career advice has tremendous impact on their ability to thrive in the global workforce.”

“This comes at a time when the tech industry around the world needs more women who are educated and trained to entering into STEM careers and work with peers across many different countries and cultures,” he added.

The winners for 2017 will be announced in June.
