After years of struggling to get the respect and dignity that they deserve, women cannot rely on society to create a safe space for them, they have to make sure that they can protect themselves when in danger. Recently, an incident from Hyderabad reminded women about the importance of self-defence.

Women have been demanding equal rights for centuries now, they still are and will probably have to continue this fight for quite a few years now. A report by the World Economic Forum revealed that women would have to wait for 131 years to achieve gender equality across the globe.

We still have a long way to go for women to travel alone safely and not feel scared while walking on a dark street. But that does not mean that the fear of getting attacked will stop them from going out. They have to learn how to protect themselves because they cannot depend on any other person to help them when they are in danger. That is a big reason why self-defence training is really important for them and a recent incident in Hyderabad proved this.

In Hyderabad, a woman killed a man who tried to barge into her house and rape her. The incident happened on June 23 in the early morning at around 4 am in Budvel, Rajendranagar. A woman named Jayamma was at her home when she heard a knock early in the morning. She went to open the door and found that it was a man from her neighbourhood identified as Srinivas.

Srinivas was drunk and entered Jayamma's house and tried to assault her. He used force and tried to rape her but Jayamma escaped from his grip and ran out of the house. The man followed her out in his drunk state and in self-defence, the woman hit him on the head with an iron rod that she found nearby. Srinivas was seriously injured and bleeding heavily and reportedly died on the spot.

After realising that she has killed Srinivas, Jayamma went to the Rajendranagar police station along with her husband to surrender and inform the police about the entire incident. The police helped in shifting the body to Osmania General Hospital and the autopsy results are awaited. The police are investigating the case.
