Hyderabad Woman Dies After Dowry Harassment

G Soundarya was the youngest of the four daughters of barber K Vemanna and Durgamma who got married to a salon owner named Ganesh in November 2020. The parents of the woman have reportedly claimed that Ganesh used to physically and mentally torture her after the birth of her twin girls, Nidarsh and Nithya. They said that they had given his family Rs. 2 lakh cash and gold as dowry at the time of the wedding but after the birth of the twins, he started asking them for more.

He wanted Vemanna to transfer his 2BHK home situated in GVR Colony in Secunderabad, where they currently lived, to his name. The father of the woman refused but instead offered him the piece of land that was in his name in Yadagirigutta. The registration of the property was taking time and hence, Ganesh had sent G Soundarya with her daughters to live with her parents 20 days back and return only when the registration was done.

The deceased's parents said that though their daughter hid how much she was tortured by her husband, they had themselves witnessed him beat her twice. He used to body-shame her for gaining weight after pregnancy and threatened her that she would marry someone else and shift to Dubai. Her parents have claimed that he physically abused her and her mother-in-law encouraged this behaviour. They said that they told her to stay with them and leave her husband but before anything could be done, she ended her life.

On Monday morning, Soundarya went to her husband's salon with her children with the intention of resolving things for good. However, she returned with a sad face and refused to tell her parents what happened. At around 2 pm she jumped off the 8th floor of the building with her twin children. Police have arrested Ganesh and have filed a case of dowry harassment and culpable homicide and the investigation is going on. The parents of the woman have also alleged that Ganesh threatened to attack them once he was out of prison.
