Exclusive Clinic Opened For Transgender Community In Hyderabad

An exclusive clinic for the transgender community at Osmania Hospital in Hyderabad was opened on Wednesday. The hospital not only provides general check-ups but is also equipped to perform gender-affirming surgeries and hormonal therapies.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad has opened a special clinic dedicated to the transgender community. The specialised clinic which began functioning on Wednesday aims to provide regular medical checkups and access to gender-reaffirming surgeries and hormonal therapies.

Hospital For Transgender Community

The hospital was inaugurated in the presence of the Home Minister of Telangana, Mohammed Mahmood Ali. The MGM Hospital had earlier established a similar clinic for the transgender community in 2022.

This clinic stands out alone as the sole facility for the transgender community in Hyderabad. Initially, the hospital was said to open only once a week on Wednesdays. The medical officers who are responsible for managing the clinic, Dr.Ruth and Dr.Parchi, hold the power of being the only two transgender doctors in the city.

Similar Facilities In Other States

To cater to the special needs of the transgender community, the government of Tamil Nadu established a multi-specialty Transgender clinic at the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai and Rajaji Hospital. Madurai. The multi-specialty clinic functions once a week on Fridays.

To further improve the accessibility of the clinic to the transgender community, Tamil Nadu’s Health Minister announced on the weekly (2019–20). Multispecialty clinics that will be further established in three other government colleges will have a budget of Rs. 60 lakhs, as per the report. 

Kerala has a special clinic exclusively for the transgender community called the Renai transgender clinic. It aims to provide medical healthcare to transgender people in accepting, supportive, comfortable, and safe spaces.

In order to build an inclusive society where the transgender community can also coexist in peace, it’s vital that their basic needs, including healthcare, are taken care of. This not only includes regular medical checkups but also gender reaffirmation surgery, hormone therapy, counselling, and insurance coverage.
