Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced that sprinter Hima Das will be appointed as the first sports ambassador of the state. The CM met Hima’s parents and confirmed this.
The star sprinter scripted history on 12th July when she became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a global track event. She clinched gold at IAAF World Under-20 Championships at Tampere, Finland. It was a moment of glory for not only Hima, but the whole country.

Sonowal visited Hima’s parents Ranjit and Junali Das at their home. He told them that the state government would felicitate Hima at a state-level programme after she returns to her native place.
He lauded Hima’s achievement and congratulated her parents on the success and achievement of their daughter.
Talking about her feat, Assam CM Sarabananda Sonowal said, “Her achievement has raised the stature of the people of the state globally.”
Besides being appointed as the sports ambassador of Assam, Hima will be awarded Rs 50 lakh, the CM told her parents.
Sonowal also felicitated Hima’s parents with the traditional ‘gamosa’ (Assamese scarf of honour), ‘sarai’ (brass metal offering tray with a stand) and a citation.

“Hima’s feat inspires Indians and the gold won by her proves that hard work, commitment and sincerity are the cornerstones of success,” the CM said
He also informed them that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elated with the success of their daughter.
During the interaction, MLA Ranjit Das requested the CM to take some necessary action in the village. He requested him to take steps to improve the condition of the playground, library, and Naamghar (prayer hall) of their village.
