Hildur Guðnadóttir won an Academy Award for best film score for her work in the film Joker. A woman won this award after 23 years.

Hildur Guðnadóttir won an Academy Award for the best film score for her work in the film Joker. While accepting the Academy award she said "To the girls, to the women, to the mothers, to the daughters, who hear the music bubbling within, please speak up. We need to hear your voices." Hildur is the fourth woman to win the Academy Award in this category. Anne Dudley won this award 23 years ago.

Hildur also said in her acceptance speech “Thank you to the Academy for welcoming me so warmly." Further adding "My fellow nominees, masters of the craft, it’s been such an honor to get to know you all." She also said, “a film composter is only as creative as the director.” She thanked Philips (the director) and said  "listen(ing) to me the whole way — so attentive. I thank you for that so deeply."

Hildur thinks her win brought attention to how bad the statistics are. She said, "this is a little bit silly, and we should be opening up the industry to more women." The last woman to win an Academy in this category is Anne Dudley for The Full Monty in 1997. Further, in 1996 Rachael Portman for Emma  in the same category. In 1983, Marilyn Bergman also won the award for the best song score with husband Alan Bergman and Michel Legrand for Yentl.

The other people who were nominated tonight for the same category included John Williams, Alexandre Desplat, Randy Newman and Thomas Newman. This was John Williams's 52nd nomination. Except for Thomas Newman, all the other nominees have won an Oscar in the past. Thomas has received 15 nominations in the past, but has never won. He received a nomination for his work in '1917' this time.
