Raksha Bandhan celebration: all-women police station in Haryan

The festive occasion of Rakhsha Bandhan turned into celebration of womanhood as an all-women police station, which was inaugurated in August last year on this very occasion celebrated the first Haryana Women Police Day. For a state known for it's skewed sex ratio, this was a good message to send out. The celebration was marked by dance recitals, inspiring speeches and most importantly self-defence techniques displayed by the women constables.

Y Puran Kumar, joint CP of Gurgaon was the chief guest and when he addressed Raksha Bandhan event which had school and college students in attendance, he said, "The police is highly sensitive towards the safety of women in the city. Recently, we launched women help desks for those who don't find it feasible to come to this police station. I hope all the girls here remember the women helpline number - please don't hesitate to seek our help whenever someone tries to harass you," as reported by TOI.

With the idea of making the state more secure for women, there are also plans to open more all-women police stations.

Tanya Singh, ACP, Pataudi, who was present at the event, agreed that this was a good idea and told TOI, "When awareness increases, several crimes can be avoided. It has been noticed that having a women police station in the surrounding area gives female residents a sense of confidence. We have noticed how victims began to speak up against domestic violence after the thana came up. The very step of a woman deciding to reach out to the police is enough give the man a message that women are now empowered and he must mend his ways."
