Gwalior Baby Born With Four Legs, Baby Under Observation
A team of doctors, along with the superintendent of the Jayarogya Hospital Group, Gwalior, examined the newborn after the birth. Superintendent Dr. RKS Dhakad in an ANI report said that the baby has four legs at birth, which means it is a physical deformity. A few foetuses become extra, which is called Ischiopagus in the language of medical science."
He further explained, " When the embryo divides into two parts, the body develops at two places. The lower part, below the waist of this baby girl, has developed with two extra legs, but those legs are inactive."
Currently, the baby is admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit of the Pediatrics Department of Kamla Raja Hospital. Doctors are monitoring the health condition of the infant. Dhakad added, "For now the doctors of the Paediatric Department are checking for other deformities in any part of the body. At present, the baby girl is completely healthy. Post-examination, if she is healthy, the doctors will remove the extra legs through surgery, so that she can live a normal life
Earlier in March this year, a similar yet different case came to light in which a woman delivered a baby with two heads, three arms, and two legs in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam. As per the sonography report, it was revealed that there are two children. But it was one baby with two spinal cords and one stomach. Dr. Brajesh Lahoti, who treated the child told ANI, "It is a rare case, its life will not be very long, and a very complex condition. The condition is known as Dicephalic Parapagus.
Birth defects or physical deformities during birth are structural changes that can affect any part of the body. For most birth defects genes are responsible. The other factors could be behaviours and things in the environment. However, how these factors might work together to cause birth defects is yet inexplicable.
