Gujarat Tribal couple Assaulted: A young woman and her partner were allegedly beaten with sticks while they were tied to a tree in Gujrata’s Chhotaudepur district, police officials stated.

The couple who belong to Chiliyavant village under the Rangpur police station was allegedly abducted after they tried to elope with the intention of getting married to each other.  The police has arrested nine men in the case on Tuesday, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police A V Katkad.

The assault on the couple was reportedly video-recorded and circulated on social media. In the video, some men are seen taking turns in beating the woman and her partner with sticks as they are tied to a tree. Other villagers are seen standing as spectators. The police became aware of the incident through the video and rushed to the village to nab the accused persons. The arrested persons have been charged for alleged kidnapping, rioting and illegal confinement. The case was registered after the woman in question filed a complaint

The Deputy SP said,  “The couple had eloped on July 18 with an intention of getting married. However, angry villagers eventually traced them to a neighbouring village and brought them back to Chiliyavant on Tuesday morning. The accused tied the duo to a tree and thrashed them with sticks.”

The woman who survived the alleged assault claimed in her complaint that the accused men were angry as the local tradition prohibits a man and a woman from the same village to marry each other.
