Gujarat prisoners Diwali parole: The state government of Gujarat has decided to give 15-day parole to women prisoners and those above the age of 60 years. The official release stated that parole will only be granted to prisoners who are not booked in serious offences.

The decision was taken as part of the state government's jail reforms and prisoners' welfare activities. They will be granted leave so that they can spend the Diwali festival with their family members. As per reports, over 181 prisoners in the state of Gujarat will benefit from the announcement and will be able to meet their loved ones on Diwali. 61 of the lot are women prisoners. Apart from persons booked under serious charges, the ones jailed under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, Terrorist & Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, Prevention of Terrorism Act will also be excluded from the state government's decision. Prisoners who have their appeals pending in High Court, foreign prisoners, NRO prisoners, the ones associated with terrorist activities and anti-social activities will also be excluded.

The prisoners of Tihar, Mandoli and Rohini jail will also be able to celebrate the festival as per reports. An officer told the Times of India, "Last year, due to Covid, we curtailed inter-ward movement of the inmates to check transmission of the disease. This year, we will allow the celebrations, but with pandemic guidelines strictly followed."

As the inmates also make sweets, diyas and candles inside the prison for retail, Sandeep Goel, the director-general of Tihar jail said that sales up to Rs 20.3 lakh were logged this year. The prisoners will reportedly be served celebratory meals and sweets on Diwali. The officer said, "The jails will be decorated with flowers and rangoli will be made. Diyas and candles will be lit in the evening. Some cultural programmes will be also be held with the participation of the inmates, reports say.
