The menace of stray dogs in India

The menace of stray dogs is not new. Nowadays, many cases of accidents and injuries are being reported in our country. India has 62 million stray dogs according to the State of Pet Homelessness Index 2021 by Mars Petcare, the global pet health and nutrition company. According to WHO, 55,000 people die due to dog attacks globally and India accounts for 36 per cent of the global deaths caused by rabies.

A while ago, the Gujarat High Court admitted that it is becoming difficult for people to go out on morning walks due to the fear of stray dogs. The court said that 60,000 cases of stray dog bites have been reported in Ahmedabad alone. The situation in other cities is even worse. The court had asked the corporation to curb the menace of stray dogs. Similarly, Delhi and Mumbai are also looking for ways to curb the problems caused by stray dogs.
