Florida Abortion Ban

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy on 15th April. But the problem is that he was seen smiling while doing it which didn't go down well with Gov. Kathy Hochul who slammed him for the same. “Smiling from ear to ear as he rips away the reproductive rights of Floridians. It’s cruel and despicable,” Hochul tweeted.

More about Florida Abortion Ban

The state currently allows abortions up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. Florida's law is due to go into effect July 1. It will significantly reduce access to late-term abortions for women across the U.S. Southeast if it is not stopped in court. An important point to note is that it does not permit for exemptions for pregnancies caused by rape, incest or human trafficking. However, it does permit the procedure when an abortion is deemed necessary to save the mother’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality.

"This will represent the most significant protections for life that have been enacted in this state in a generation," DeSantis said at a news conference before signing the bill.

One of his tweets reads, "Our bill protects unborn babies from abortion after 15 weeks – these are babies with beating hearts, who can move, taste, see and feel pain. Proud to defend life!" His tweet got a lot of social media reactions. "So, what about the kids already born? Are you mandating parental leave? Getting money into public schools? Making sure there are no starving kids in your state? Making sure they all have healthcare?", one user wrote.

"So, after 15 weeks, you're going to either provide benefits for social services, etc, and require that fathers pay for the additional child care, hospital bills, etc? And since you value life so much, how about more services for single mothers *after* the baby is born?", another one asked.

"If I were a floridian who got pregnant and the father leaves me, can I get child support as soon as I get a pregnancy test? Can I start getting tax credits from conception? Car pool lane privileges?", a woman asked
