Goa Man Saved Dutch Woman
- Dias immediately told his wife that he should help, ran through 30 metres of bushes, and climbed over a wall to enter the resort. The gate of the resort was too far, and there seemed to be no time.
- On entering the tent from where the screams were coming, Dias found a man trying to overpower a woman. The accused was trying to hold a woman on the bed while she resisted him.
- Dias had bravely kicked, punched, and pushed the accused away from the woman. He ran outside, and Dias assumed that he would disappear.
- As Dias was handing a bedsheet to the woman, the accused returned. He tapped on Dia's shoulder, holding a knife. He stabbed Dias multiple times in the back and neck.
- "Blood was gushing out, and I thought I would faint. So I thought it was perhaps best to alert my wife and neighbours so they would come and help this woman," said Dias, sitting on a hospital bed.
- He somehow managed to run back home, where he collapsed after telling his wife to get help and save the woman.
- The Goa police arrested the accused and identified him as Abhishek Verma, a resident of Uttrakhand. The accused has been charged with molesting and stabbing the woman.
- On Friday, the Goa Chief Minister, Pramod Sawat, announced that Dias would be felicitated for his courage with a bravery award on August 15, Independence Day.
- The tourism minister of Goa, Rohan Khaunte, visited Dias at the hospital and handed him a letter of appreciation. Minister Khaunte said that Dias has proven that Goa locals are selfless and helpful.
- In response to his friends and relatives calling him a hero, Dias said, "I don’t feel that I’m a hero. I got a chance to save someone’s life, and I’m happy and blessed that I acted on it. It was just an instinctive thing." Dias said that he has yet to meet the Dutch woman. "We just waved at each other while we were being taken for tests at the hospital," he said.
