During the treatment, the minor alleged said that her uncle’s son, daughter, and wife tried to set her ablaze. She also alleged that she had been raped by her cousin three months ago. The survivor suffered severe burn injuries and was rushed to Manipuri district hospital, her health is said to be critical.
The minor’s mother said that her daughter did not reveal the ordeal, but after she complained of severe stomach pain they found out she was pregnant. The village panchayat was informed of the situation and asked both parties to “reach a compromise” since the crime was committed “within the family”.
Reportedly, the minor and her mother initially agreed not to file a police complaint as they were being pressured by the village panchayat to reach a compromise instead. The mother of the accused publically apologised for the crime and assured the survivor’s mother that she would get the survivor’s pregnancy aborted and would later get her married to someone else.
However, the accused’s mother and sister took the minor to their house, poured kerosene on her, and set her ablaze. According to SP Dixit, the neighbours rescued the minor and rushed her to the hospital.
A case was registered against the three under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Section 376 (rape) under the Indian Penal Code. The case was also registered under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
The mother of the accused was arrested and sent to jail, and the accused and his sisters are absconding. SP Dixit said that efforts are being made to nap the two accused.
