Geeta Phogat returns to wrestling: The first Indian woman to win a gold medal in wrestling in the Commonwealth Games, Geeta Phogat announced that she is returning to the wrestling mat in full swing, that too after two years gap on Wednesday.

She took to Twitter and announced that her main aim now is to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics Games (slated on July 23, 2021) and she will put on rigorous training and hardwork to "achieve new goals". Phogat tweeted, "Going back to My Love & Passion after 2 year… I believe you will continue to give your love and blessings to me… Let’s get started to achieve new Goals… Thank You  @FederationWrest and  @Media_SAI To give me this apportunity #wrestling (sic)."

The star athlete was last seen competing on the wrestling mat in 2019 and last year during the coronavirus pandemic she took some time off to prepare for the upcoming big games. She had earlier talked about maternity break and how it was not simple to get back on the mat after giving birth. The 32-year-old wrestler stayed away from wrestling for two-long years due to pregnancy and baby and now she wants to make a comeback.

“I started fitness training sometime back but the doctor advised me to wait as I have to feed my kid. We wrestlers are not used to doing light workouts. But since the last couple of months, I have started getting into the groove. Training is difficult without an opponent so I’m doing whatever exercises are possible at home,” the wrestler had said during an online chat show &feature=emb_logo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In The Sportlight last year.

“I have gained some weight during pregnancy, so my priority would be to get fit. And after that, whatever qualifying tournament is there, I will participate and try to book a place for the Olympics,” she added.

The athlete scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold at Commonwealth Games in 2010. She then went on to win the bronze medal at the 2012 World Championships and also has two bronze medals at the Asian championships. She was the first woman wrestler from India to qualify for the Olympics in 2012.
