Julius Dorphang: The Former MLA was sentenced to 25 years in jail on August 25 for raping a minor girl in 2017. Dorphang's counsel Kishore Ch Gautam confirmed that they would challenge the judgment in Meghalaya High Court.

The former member of the Legislative Assembly was sentenced to 25 years in jail on Wednesday for sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2017. Special judge for Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) F S Sangma gave the verdict on Wednesday.

Here's What We Know Of The Case:

  1.  Julius Dorphang's counsel Gautam stated that he will file a miscellaneous application to suspend the sentence, seeking bail for Dorphang.
  2. Dorphang was elected to the Assembly as an Independent candidate in 2013 from the Mawhati seat in the Ri-Bhoi district
  3. Reportedly, he was accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in 2017 following which the police registered a case against him.
  4. However, soon after the case was lodged, Dorphang went into hiding.
  5. He was eventually arrested near the inter-state bus terminus on the outskirts of Assam capital Guwahati.
  6. The charges were that of under sections of the POCSO Act and the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act.
  7. According to a report by NDTV, a single-judge bench of the Meghalaya High Court granted him bail on medical grounds in 2020 after which he was lodged at the Nongpoh district jail.
  8. Dorphang was reportedly asked to pay a fine of Rs 15 lakh.
  9. Three other unnamed handlers of the survivor were also sentenced to life imprisonment and were to pay a fine of Rs 1,00,000 each.
  10. According to a report by Tribune, Darisha Mary Kharbamon, Mamoni Parveen and her husband Sandeep Biswa were accused of getting the girl for the crime and forcing her into prostitution.
