The rape survivor set herself ablaze outside Supreme Court earlier this month. She went live on social media to show her self-immolation with her male companion. The women and her friend both died during treatment in a Delhi hospital. In the Facebook live, the now deceased woman had accused several authoritative figures such as CO Amresh Singh, SSP Amit Pathak, Inspector Sanjay Rai, his son Vivek Rai, former Inspector General and Amitabh Thakur of harassment.

As per a report by Aaj Tak, the woman had alleged that Thakur was conspiring against her at the behest of criminal-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari to save Atul Rai. Before her death and the self-immolation, Rai's brother, Pawan Kumar Rai had lodged a complaint against her accusing her of fraud in her birth certificate.

The case against Thakur was filed in 2020. The survivor had alleged that the former IPS officer Thakur took money from Atul Rau to act as his political agent. Thakur had accused the late victim of making objectionable statements about the accused MP's family. Many video and audio clips had gone viral on social media. Thakur had appeared infront of the committee to answer their questions. He had claimed that he was helping in the case as a social activist.

For the past two years, Atul Rau had been lodged in Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj. Despite being in jail, he had won in 2019 elections from his constituency, Ghosi. The deceased victim belonged to Battiah and was a student of Uday Pratap College in Varanasi. She had filed a complaint against Atul Rai on May 1, 2019 at the Lanka police station and had accused Rai of rape.
