Former Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will be director at ITC

Women at the top can transform companies and steer them into a progressive director. ITC has chosen former foreign secretary Nirupama Rao and appointed her as the Additional Independent Director on its board. She will be assuming her position from 8 April at the Kolkata headquarters.

"The board of directors of the company appointed Nirupama Rao, IFS (Retd), as an Additional Independent Director of the company with effect from April 8, 2016," ITC informed the BSE.

Rao is a 1973 batch Indian Foreign Services officer. She served as India’s Foreign Secretary from 2009 to 2011. After Chokila Iyer, she was the second woman to become Foreign Secretary of India.

She has held several significant posts and has broken gender barriers. She was the first female spokesperson of the MEA, Chief of Personnel as Joint Secretary, East Asia and External Publicity. She has also been Ambassador to Peru and China, and High Commissioner to Sri Lanka in the past.
