A fashion brand started by the biker babes, UpsideDown is a testament to the unification of two different worlds that come together, for the love of beautiful clothing! Army kids Nikita Sharma and Maviya Khan have grown up together and are inspired by nature and everything around them. After a four year course in Fashion design, the fashionistas launched a couture label called "UpsideDown " - a brand that brings together two opposites to create something unique.

Fashion is no longer just a woman's game.

Fashion is often regarded as a very womanly thing as it is reminiscent of the times when women would ( and they still do) take up sewing to support their families, earn those few extra bucks, kill their free time, or just take it up as a hobby.  But now the times have changed, as consumers, men have become more fashion conscious over the times! Most of the leading designers are men. Sabyasachi, Tarun Tahiliani, Shivam and Narresh and so on… and they are brilliant! It’s also considered that men have lesser clothing options. The time has come when men have started exploring their clothing options and it’s no more considered as just a womanly thing.

 For the love of clothing

The love of clothing goes way back for us. Having fashion conscious mothers, we would always be dressed up in the prettiest and cutest clothes. And that was accompanied with matching socks and hairbands and shoes! We were quite fashionable as kids. As we grew up we became the fashion advisors/stylists for our family members. Love for fabrics came naturally to us! We are doing the things we envisioned!

The competition is strong in this one.

There are so many budding designers, with so much creativity and everyone’s trying to do something new. And yet you have to be out of the box! There are too many big players in the industry. As a young entrepreneur you have to build a brand value in order to make a place for yourself.  As much as you have to be creative with your designs, you have to be equally creative with your marketing. It’s all about how well you sell yourself.

Personal style tips, anyone? :) 

Personal style is all about being you. Never be afraid of trying new things. Recognize the colors that suit you, the fit that flatters you and add your own charm to it. You don’t have to be loaded in your wallet to be fashionable. Upcycling is a cheaper and sustainable way. Splurge on staple pieces and have a few in-trend pieces and mix and match! Also, it’s important to have an inspiration. And, well, the most important thing is self-confidence. You carry yourself with confidence and the world will notice! Use fashion as a way of telling the world who you are.

The work mantra, influences and favorite designers. 

We are more inspired than influenced. So we would have to go with no influences. As for inspiration, we are inspired most by nature. But we aren’t restricted just to that! And as for a work mantra? Just have fun in whatever it is you are doing! Tarun Tahiliani, Shivan and Narresh, Archana Rao, Anamika Khanna, Manish Arora are our all time favs.

Should a woman take the startup plunge?

Once you have your business plan and ideas in place, your investment plan… you just need to work hard. Perseverance and consistency are two very important things for an entrepreneur, we feel.  Sometimes your idea can take a while to pull off, it takes time to be accepted in the market but if you are persistent then you will reach your goal. Entrepreneurship lets you learn a lot. You learn from your experiences. Your mistakes are not failures, they are just another learning. And most of all, it gives you freedom! You are your own boss. You make your own rules. It’s a tough world out there but take it easy!
