El Chapo wife arrested on drug trafficking charges: The wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was arrested on Monday in the United States. 31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro is accused of international drug trafficking, the Justice Department said.

Several charges have been brought against Aispuro including conspiring with her husband, running his multibillion-dollar worth of Sinaloa drug cartel and plotting his escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. She is also charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana in the country. The Justice Department also accused her of engaging in "planning yet another prison escape” before Guzman was extradited to the US in January 2017. His wife played a key role in running his business spanning 25 years, the Justice Department said. Now, she is charged for alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
Aispuro was a beauty queen in her teens. The couple has been together since 2007 and has twin daughters born in 2011. Her father, Ines Coronel Barreras, was also arrested in 2013 with hundreds of pounds of marijuana across the border from Douglas, Arizona. Months earlier, the US Treasury had announced financial sanctions against her father for his alleged drug trafficking. Guzman was convicted in 2019. Later, Aispuro went on to launch a clothing line in her husband's name.
Mike Vigil, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s former chief of international operations, said she “has been involved in the drug trade since she was a little girl. She knows the inner workings of the Sinaloa cartel.”
