When Lakshmi passed away, she was leaving her enclosure at the Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple on Eswaran Kovil Street on her customary morning walk with her two mahouts.

Elephant Lakshmi died

When Lakshmi got close to the Calve College Government Higher Secondary School campus on Kamatchi Amman Kovil Street, she passed out from exhaustion and stopped moving. Then, all of a sudden, she swooned and fell to the ground.

The elephant was not responsive to the mahouts' directions, and it eventually passed away. According to the reports, The traffic police assisted the temple administration in bringing in a crane after they learned of this information. To allow devotees to pay respects, the body was hoisted and carried to the Sri Manakular Vinayagar Temple.

When R.V. Janakiraman was the Chief Minister of Puducherry, Lakshmi was given to the temple when she was ten years old.

There was no other known cause for the elephant to collapse on the side of the road, according to a senior officer with the Forest Department, and cardiac arrest is suspected. The cause of the death will be ascertained through an autopsy.

The source further stated that Lakshmi was receiving excellent veterinary treatment and was in good health. The animal's health was not a cause for concern, and all of her most recent blood tests had been satisfactory.

Despite the fact that she was an elephant in captivity, the authorities went above and above to ensure her welfare. According to sources, the government had already begun building the elephant's enclosure on a two-acre land near Chinnayapuram in Muthialpet.

The arrangements for Lakshmi's burial have been arranged by the temple authorities for Wednesday night.

PETA Shows Sadness

In a statement, Khushboo Gupta, director of advocacy projects for PETA India, emphasised her organization's concern at Lakshmi's forced isolation for years in captivity due to her refusal to live with other elephants.

According to the organisation, "Given her suffering, her sudden death regretfully comes as no surprise, it is a chance for her happiness lost."
